Interesting Facts about the Chinese Red Dog

There are tons of interesting things that you need to know about your Chinese Red Dog pet. Identifying these facts can help to improve both your life and the dog’s. Understanding what can make your dog tick is essential to their home life, their entire behaviour, and even their personality and traits development.

The Chinese Red Dog, also known as Laizhou Hong in China, is a great-looking, protective, energetic, and powerful dog breed. While some facts will vary based on the kind of breed that you own, we’ve put together some interesting facts about the Chinese Red Dog.

Origin

The history and origin of the Chinese Red Dog can be traced to the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It began when German colonisers came to Shandong Province and brought along with them a population of Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Rottweilers. The 3 strains were crossbred with native Shandong breeds like the Xian Hound. This complex mix gave birth to the Chinese Red Dog.

Training

The Chinese Red Dog is highly regarded for being intelligent and trainable, and they can learn a lot of tricks very fast. Beginners who don’t have much experience with Chinese Red Dogs should do proper research or seek help with their training especially if they are new parents to the breed. This is not because the dog is not smart or trainable but because with this breed, it is critical to start the training as early as when they are still a young pup.

After the leash, the dog has to stay behind its grasp to have a better understanding of its status.

If you fail to socialise and train the Chinese Red Dog, this powerful and protective breed will cause a lot of trouble. But being with the right owner, with a firm, patient, kind, and consistent trainer, these dogs can learn all the commands easily and quickly.

Companion

The Laizhou Hong is not only a guard and protector dog but also a very good companion pet. The Chinese Red Dog is known for its friendliness and loyalty towards the members of the whole family. Ot would risk and defend their family with their own life if needed.

It can live with other pets or dogs in a household especially if raised together from puppyhood. The Chinese Red Dog is also a playful partner for kids, but of course, you should never leave any dog unattended or unsupervised with a small child.

They are highly recognized for their faithfulness, protectiveness, and their calmness towards children and other pets.

When it comes to strangers, Chinese Red Dogs must be trained to socialise as they are naturally protective.

Coat

One of the first things that you will notice about this breed is its beautiful coat, especially the coloration. The word “Hong” in their official name means the colour red because rich red markings are common for the breed. These dogs must be black with well-pronounced red markings on the muzzle, chest, legs, throat, and cheek.

They feature a short but quite dense coat.

Size

The Laizhou Hong is a very healthy-looking, athletic, muscular, and quite big dog breed with an average height ranging between 64-79 cm, which is 25-31 inches. They can usually weigh approximately around 80 pounds which is 37 kg. Naturally, the females are slightly smaller than males.

Tongue

An interesting fact is that very often, these dogs have dark spots on the tongue. They can also have very dark gums. Not all dogs have these dark spots, but it is not unusual for the breed and it is something they have in common with many other dog breeds from China.

Exercise

As you can expect, the Laizhou Hong is a very athletic type and comes with a great stamina, and has a big energy level, and relatively high exercise needs. They need daily long walks or jogs accompanied with some robust or task-oriented playtime and they will always have time doing training or tricks lessons. It is essential to have a proper routine exercise for your dog so they can calm and relax indoors.

Without sufficient exercise, the Chinese Red Dog might develop some unwanted behaviours such as excessive barking or become destructive around the house.

It needs to be trained in obedience as such a large powerful dog with no understanding of how to walk on lead in public areas will not end well.

Maintenance

The grooming and overall maintenance of the Chinese Red Dog are relatively simple. Their coat will look good even without any grooming needed. Of course, having a regular brushing brings a lot of benefits as it will eliminate dead hair and minimise the shedding, remove any sort of dirt from the coat and maintain its best possible condition all time. But no other grooming needs are necessary as they only require little grooming and Chinese Red Dogs are average shedders.

Just like with any other breed, you should regularly check out the dog’s ear, eyes, nails, and teeth and clip them or clean them if needed as possible.

Overall Health

There are insufficient scientific studies about the Chinese Red Dog’s overall health, but it should rather be a healthy dog breed with a good lifespan of around 13 or 14 years. Of course, just like any other breed, they may suffer from some health issues, which may include ear infections, bloating, hip dysplasia, or some dental issues.

Bite Force

The Bite Force of China’s Red Dog is between 238 to 743 PSI.
